Rep. Hagedorn responds to President’s border security address

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTTC) – Minnesota 1st congressional district Rep. Jim Hagedorn issued a statement following President Trump’s border security address.

“I remain committed to securing America’s borders by dramatically reducing illegal entries, implementing a merit-based immigration system and restoring the rule of law.

During tonight’s address to the nation, President Trump outlined the continuing crisis on the U.S. – Mexico border and the negative implications and serious threats (felony crime, terrorism, human trafficking, drug trafficking, etc.) posed by illegal entry and inadequate border security.

The Administration has requested roughly $5 billion to enhance physical border security, a recommendation made by professional law enforcement personnel at DHS. This is a sum that represents less than 1% of the annual U.S. defense budget. In my view, this is a much needed and reasonable request to address the border security crisis and national security is contingent upon a secure border.

If the Democrats continue to obstruct progress on protecting our homeland, then I support all necessary steps needed for the President to construct physical border structures. The first responsibility of any Member of Congress is to defend the United States and protect the American people. The residents of Minnesota’s First District can rest assured that I will continue to support measures to Keep America Safe with secure borders and a foreign policy of Peace Through Strength.”
