ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Gage Elementary School students were dismissed from school at 12 p.m. as a precaution Wednesday due to the danger of a potential roof collapse.
A custodial staff member noticed a slight “bowing” of the ceiling tiles in the east part of the building in the morning, according to a statement from Rochester Public Schools. The school moved students to the west side of the building and called in a structural engineer.
The engineer was concerned about the large amounts of snow on the east side of the building, causing the ceiling to bow. He said the wind had blown the snow from the west to the east side, creating a heavy drift. He said after his initial assessment, those classrooms should be safe after the snow is cleared off.
School is canceled Thursday.
