CHATFIELD, Minn. (KTTC) – The Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office found two dead horses on a Chatfield property Thursday.
An anonymous caller alerted police to the property in the 30000 block of Highway 30 on Monday, claiming that the owners were not properly caring for the animals.
The sheriff’s office brought an investigator from the Animal Humane Society and a local veterinarian to evaluate the animals.
The owner willingly turned over the remaining horses to the Animal Human Society in Golden Valley; their condition is not being released.
Sheriff John DeGeorge said the department often brings in animal experts to help in cases like this. “When we have to evaluate an animal to determine whether a crime has been committed, we bring those people in to help us evaluate the condition of the animals and whether those statutory responsibilities have been met by the animal’s owners.”
The sheriff’s office cannot comment on whether other animals live on the property, or how many horses were handed over to the humane society.
KTTC asked if the owner has the potential to get those horses back. According to Sheriff DeGeorge, that would have to be worked out after the case is finished, but as of right now, he said no.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be submitted to the Fillmore County Attorney’s Office for review.
