Throwback Thursday: Boy Scouts help the war effort

While World War II raged on in Europe and the Pacific, citizens at home did all they could to support the war effort.

Salvage drives are one such example of this.

The Rochester Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts shown here raised a total of $57.14, equivalent to almost $900 today, from paper salvage collections. They donated the funds to several organizations, including the American Red Cross. County Chairman Dr. G. P. Sheridan received the oversized $5.00 check from the Scouts on April 11, 1942.

This photo comes from the archives at the History Center of Olmsted County.
