Proposed quarry expansion has some Oronoco residents upset

ORONOCO, Minn. (KTTC) — Concern in Oronoco is arising over a proposed expansion of the Goldberg Quarry. The Oronoco Planning Advisory Commission met Monday night to weigh the pros and cons.

Milestone Materials operate the quarry and at the meeting laid out the reasons for the expansion, along with the safety measures they plan to implement.

Several home owners expressed their displeasure at the thought of a bigger quarry, but all conceded the quarry has been a good neighbor, for what it is.

The commission ended up voting unanimously to approve the recommendation of a zoning change for the property.

“It’s a tough one, we’ve been dealing with this for many years with numerous quarries. Oronoco Township is unique in that we have a lot of this resource versus other parts of the county, but a quarry is also one of those things that is ‘not in my backyard’ type of things, so it’s a tough one,” said Paige Collins, the Oronoco Township Planning Commission Chairperson.

While the commission voted to approve, it is just a recommendation and the final decision is up to the Oronoco town board at its next meeting, which is in two weeks.

After that, there’s an environmental assessment writing to determine the impact of the mine expansion. And then comes a 30 day comment period before the expansion can get a final green light and a conditional use permit.
