ST. CHARLES, Minn. (KTTC) – Just off Highway 14 there was a school looking to do something it had never done before.
“Once we got there that was when we realized we’ve got a real shot to actually go and win this thing,” said head coach Eric Klein.
In it’s 114 year history, St. Charles High School had never won a team state championship of any kind. That is, until last week when it won the Class A True Team State Track meet.
“You [have to] be very proud because it’s the first time in our history.” said senior Dan Jones. “Just to say ‘We did this,’ it’s not like the other towns that do it constantly, but we’re in there.”
When the dust settled after 23 events at Stillwater High School, it was the Saints that rose above the rest. Entering the meet as underdogs, the Saints proved they were the best team in the state.
“This is not the most talented crew we’ve ever had,” said Klein. “I was really, really impressed with this team simply because from the beginning of the season this is something they went and got. It wasn’t just given to them. They went and earned this.”
They also earned a hero’s welcome. When the Saints returned home, the townspeople greeted a state champion team for the first time in it’s history. A wait 114 years long, rewarded at last.
“I had no idea we could even accomplish this,” said senior Dalton Balcome. “It really sunk in when we got home and the whole city. or just a lot of people, were just waiting for us to get off that bus.”
“I think we all had the want to do it. We all wanted it, but none of us really thought that we were going to get that far,” said Jones.
But get this far they did. State Champions, at last.
