Crop duster crashes in Sumner, pilot dead

SUMNER, Iowa (KWWL) –  Bremer County Emergency Management confirms a crop duster crashed near a Dollar General Thursday morning in Sumner. The pilot, identified as David Baker, 56, of Swedesburg, Iowa, has died.

The plane went down about 7:30 a.m. along Highway 93. It clipped a number of power lines as it crashed, but did not directly hit any buildings. Witnesses said a wheel from the landing gear hit the front doors of a nearby bank. The impact broke the glass in those doors.

Witnesses at a nearby business say they saw a large “fireball” immediately following the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
