The Original Rochester Greek Fest returns for its 57th year

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – You know what they say, when in Greece, do as the Grecians do; or something like that. That’s exactly what the Holy Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church is inviting the community to do this weekend. The Original Rochester Greek Fest is back!

Rochester Greek Fest gyros.It’s a tradition that started out as a small church picnic 57 years ago and now has grown into a three day Rochester festival. This weekend is all about celebrating Greek heritage. From authentic food, to traditional dancing and live music.

Also a part of the three day affair, Greek Musical Chairs, trivia games like “Greek or not Greek” and a pita throwing contest. Four teams of pita throwing champions will be crowned this weekend. The first contest was Friday at 7:40 p.m.

“Its a new thing we start last year, we’re going to get three teams of two, you know you’ve done the old egg Gyro poster at Rochester Greek Fest.throwing contest with two people, well, we do it with pita where you have to throw it over your head and your partner has to catch it in a pan,” Organizer Ari Kolas said. “Every time you catch it, you’re further apart. Last year if you look at our stage, we had people off the stage about 30 or 40 feet. It was pretty amazing.”

Professional dancers from Minnesota Greek will be in town Saturday and Sunday for multiple shows throughout the weekend.

Greek Fest wraps up at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
