NEAR MAZEPPA, Minn. (KTTC) – Authorities believe alcohol and darkness may have contributed to an incident on the Lake Zumbro Dam near Mazeppa Saturday night.
A pontoon went over the dam around 10:40 p.m. near Mac’s Park Place.
According to the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, four people docked their pontoon earlier in the night near the building structure portion of the Power Dam. They walked down to Mac’s Park Place to visit and then came back to the boat. Based on statements from the driver, they didn’t realize they were at the edge of the dam until right after boarding the boat.
The driver apparently tried maneuvers to leave the area but couldn’t. He then advised passengers to sit on one side of the boat. Before going over the dam, one person jumped into the water and swam to a buoy. The other three occupants road the pontoon over the dam where they landed upright sand safe in the boat, which rested on a shelf below the dam.
