KASSON, Minn. (KTTC) – There were rumblings that this year’s Kasson-Mantorville Volleyball team wouldn’t be as good as they were in years past. Senior Emilee Terry heard that chatter loud and clear.
“We just knew that we had to be the underdogs kind of, and do what everybody didn’t expect us to be,” said Terry.
The KoMets lost three college-bound players from a season ago, but Terry has made sure their results didn’t slip. Seventeen games into the season, and this year’s KoMets find themselves exactly where they were at this juncture last year — 15-2 and AA Showcase Winners where Terry was named showcase MVP.
“[The Showcase win] was pretty big. Obviously we’re going into it thinking ‘Ok, let’s get in the top whatever,’ and we played really well,” she said. “We’re all just really happy with our win.”
Terry leads her team in kills, and just led them through a week in which they won seven games. It seems Terry has taken her game to a new level in 2019, but head coach Adam VanOort says Terry has been this good all along.
“If you looked at how she played in the state tournament last year, she was All-State or All-Tournament Team, so she was playing pretty good last year, too,” said VanOort. “She’s a really well rounded player. She can do a lot of different things for us. She’s very versatile, so she’s kind of able to do whatever we need her to do and she’s happy to fill that role.”
Terry even won showcase MVP honors not feeling 100%. The senior star battled a back injury on Saturday, but willed herself to compete… and win the top individual honor of the event.
“I went into Saturday and [my back] was kind of hurting a little bit,” said Terry. “I ended up just playing through it. I was like ‘I’ll figure it out on Sunday. If it hurts, if I can’t get out of bed… it was worth it.”
Emilee Terry of the Kasson-Mantorville Volleyball team is this week’s KTTC Athlete of the Week.
