ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – It seems like there’s an app for practically everything – and if there wasn’t, there probably is now with the launch of a “When in Rochester, MN” app.
The app’s mission? To provide easier access to all Rochester has to offer its residents and visitors.
“There’s so many people that visit Rochester 3.5 million a year, 2.3 coming for the Mayo Clinic,” Mayo Civic Center and Experience Rochester President Joe Ward said.
Between the hustle and bustle – whether you live in the Med City, or you’re just visiting – it can be easy to miss things.
“Four years ago we started looking at data about where the gaps in experience were and we found that both our community members and our patients were looking for easily accessible information and a mobile solution is what we decided to to move forward on,” DMCA Community Engagement and Experience Director Jamie Rothe said.
That idea became an app with a goal to help navigate, highlight and enhance the qualities that make Rochester, Rochester.
“It’s a great way to reach people right where they are, right in the palm of their hand in their phone,” Ward said.
In a collaboration between Experience Rochester, Destination Medical Center and Mayo Clinic, the mobile app caters to the trifecta of people who populate the city.
“The app is really for all three people, patients, visitors and community members.”
It includes a feature just for Mayo patients.
“In the mayo clinic app, its all geared toward their medical visit,” Rothe added. “Here it centers around their experience here in Rochester and it has information about parking, buildings, how to navigate the campus.”
Visitors, can live like the locals.
“The “near me” section is amazing,” Rothe said. “It tells you what is near you and its filterable as well you can find things to do, where to eat and its within block radius.”
Another favorite by app organizers, is the “surprise me” light bulb.
“It’s basically a surprise me feature,” Ward explained. “It’s actually an intuitive app, so it gets to know the user and to suggest things that people would like. We like to think we know everything but its always fun to live like the locals do and really explore something new.”
Plus, it gives community members a chance to explore the city they call home.
“Don’t assume you know everything about your city. Vacation in your own backyard, try a new restaurant, hit that light bulb and find a new idea,” Ward said.
Ward adds that over time, they would like to start adding new features to the app, but what those features are – depends on the user feedback, which you give right on the app.
