Waukesha South student shot after pointing weapon at officers, police say

UPDATE: Police say a 17-year-old Waukesha South High School student was shot and injured by police Monday morning after the student pointed a weapon at the officer.

A school resource officer responded about 10:15 a.m. when told that a student had a handgun at the school.

When the officer responded, he attempted to secure the classroom and get the other students to safety, Waukesha Police Chief Russel Jack said in a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

Waukesha police officers and sheriff’s deputies also responded, where they attempted to get the student to turn over the gun.

The student ignored the officers and eventually pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers, Jack said.

That’s when one of the officers shot the student, and officers immediately began lifesaving measures, Jack said.

The remaining students were evacuated from the classroom and the school was put on lockdown.

The officer who shot the student is an 11-year-veteran of the police department.

The student is in stable condition at a local hospital. No officers or students were injured.
