GOODHUE, Minn. (KTTC) -- The Goodhue Wildcats have been good at basketball for years, but this season presented a different challenge.
"We didn't really know how this season was going to go," said sophomore Joslyn Carlson.
The Wildcats, a perennial power in Class A, got bumped up to Class AA.
"It motivated us a lot. And going up a Class, that just wanted us to prove ourselves even more," Carlson said.
Through 17 games, the results have been staggering -- the Wildcats are 16-1 and riding a 15-game win streak, including beating Stewartville 67-58 last Thursday. Carlson scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
"Joslyn just seemed to have a different mindset that night," said Goodhue head coach Josh Wieme. "She was just going to attack the basket more. She took it upon herself a little more to score."
Her 20 point, 12 rebound effort was her best game of the season. Winning 15 consecutive games, the Wildcats now own their longest win-streak since 2010.
"We don't go into games scared, and we just play how we play," she said. "We don't think 'Oh, if we lose this our winning streak is going to be done.' We don't think like that. We just go and we play."
Carlson has always been ready for the big moment. Last year as a freshman, she scored the game-winning basket in the state semifinals, paving the Wildcats way to the state title game.
"Even as an 8th grader when Joslyn first started playing varsity, it was pretty obvious that we had something here," Wieme said. "In that game in particular, we were calling plays for her. We were going to the freshman."
And now, Carlson and her well-rounded team have their eyes on proving they belong with the best of the best in Double-A basketball.
"Always get better. That's what we do."
Joslyn Carlson of the Goodhue Wildcats is this week's KTTC Athlete of the Week.
