ZUMBROTA, Minn. (KTTC) - There's no other way to say it: Zumbrota-Mazeppa's Zach Hutton gets buckets. Big buckets.
In the last seven games for the Cougars, the the senior guard has hit not one -- but two -- game-winners.
Plain and simple, Hutton has the clutch gene.
"Those days were just kind of special days," Hutton said.
His first game-winner had a touch of destiny.
"Going into the first game, I was like, 'You know, I've never hit one in my life.' And then it kind of just happened that day," he said.
The thing is, it didn't "just happen." Right before he hit the shot, a teammate went into the team huddle and told everyone where the ball was going.
"Our other senior leader, Anthony Cylkowski, came in and said 'I don't know what we're going to do, but it's going in Zach's hands.' And it worked in our favor," said ZM head coach Fred Liffrig.
And then, it happened again. Ten short days later, Hutton again won the Cougars a game as time-expired.
"He knows where the basketball needs to be," Liffrig said. "He's well disciplined, he's well-rounded, he's raised well by his family. And it all adds up to this is why we're winning."
The Cougars are playing their best basketball of the season, winners of four straight games. Last Friday, he also became just the sixth ZM boys player to score 1,000 points, and the first since 2011.
"That's always been my big career goal my entire life. I've seen just a few peole ever do it in my lifetime in Zumbrota history, so it's kind of cool to be on that list with them," Hutton said.
Zach Hutton of the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars Boys Basketball team is this week's KTTC Athlete of the Week.
