Less humid today
Today's bounty of sunshine is compliments of strong high pressure from the Plains of southern Canada that is gliding into the area, giving us a break from stormy weather for a while. We're enjoying less heat and humidity today compared to what we experienced Tuesday when we came within a degree of tying a record high temperature with an afternoon reading of 93 degrees. Temperatures will still be a little warmer than the seasonal average this afternoon with low to mid-80s in most spots and a slight northwest breeze.
Late week thunderstorms possible
A storm system will move into the region from the Plains Thursday, bringing chances for late afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms to the area. A few of our western counties are in the "Marginal Risk" of severe weather from the Storm Prediction Center for Thursday, so a handful of strong storms will be possible with large hail and strong wind gusts in some of those storms. The greatest risk overall will be west of our area along the Missouri Valley. High temperatures will be in the mid 80s with a light southwest breeze. A few of those showers and thunderstorms will hang around into early Friday before another strong area of high pressure brings sunnier, drier weather for most of the day. High temperatures will be in the lower 80s with a northwest breeze.
A warm weekend with sunshine and rain
We'll enjoy a day of sunshine and relatively comfortable temperatures Saturday under high pressure before a storm system from the west produces some showers and thunderstorms for the early portion of Sunday. Right now, it looks like skies will clear a bit more for the afternoon Sunday when temperatures will climb into the lower 80s.
Warm, then cooler for the upcoming week
Warm, humid air will build into the region to start the upcoming work week and high temperatures will be in the low to mid-80s for the first half of the week. A cold front will trigger chances for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday and early Wednesday. Behind that front, cooler air will settle in, dropping our high temperatures to more seasonable 70s after the early week stretch of 80-degree heat.
