CANNON FALLS, Minn. (KTTC) -- Court documents show a Cannon Falls man admitted to killing his father.
Cole DeGroot, 21, allegedly called dispatch and admitted to shooting his 55-year-old father, Terry.
According to a criminal complaint, when deputies took him into custody, he said he shot his father in the rib. Law enforcement later found the man dead with blood pooling on the floor of a skid loader.
During an interview with investigators, DeGroot said he went to help his father clean a creek bed that was washed-in.
He was using a skid loader to clean mud when it got stuck, causing his father to yell at him.
According to the complaint, DeGroot left the area and retrieved a handgun from his father's house. He then called his mother said he "had enough" of his father and he was going to shoot him.
He returned to the area and pointed the gun at his dad, who was sitting in the skid loader.
DeGroot claimed he only meant to scare his father and the handgun accidentally discharged. He told investigators that he didn't know the gun was loaded and he didn't check.
DeGroot is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, one with intent and one without. His bail has been set at $1 million.
He's back in court on Wednesday.
