Nearly a third of inmates at FCI Waseca have COVID-19

WASECA, Minn. (KTTC) -- A COVID-19 outbreak has surged at a Waseca federal prison in recent days.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is reporting 187 new active cases of the virus at FCI Waseca, an increase of 79 from the day before.

Nearly one-third of the inmates at the facility currently have the coronavirus. The federal prison holds 599 women.

FCI Waseca has the third-highest number of active COVID-19 cases among inmates of any federal prison in the country.

According to the Bureau, 295 of the federal inmates have tested positive during the pandemic. 108 women have recovered. No one has died.

Two staff members currently have the virus. Seven have recovered.

Across the country, there are over 2,000 federal inmates with active cases. Nearly 12,500 have recovered while 123 have died, according to the Bureau.
