(WHO/NBC News) -- A 14-year-old Iowa girl is in custody after stealing a police SUV and leading officers on a chase that reached speeds of 110 miles per hour.
Coon Rapids Police Chief Andy Klein says it began when one of his officers was sent to the girl's home after her family called asking for assistance.
“The officer had the juvenile sitting in his patrol car, just with the weather being colder. He dipped outside of his vehicle inside to speak with the relatives about what was going to happen going forward, and that’s when the juvenile just hopped in the driver seat and took off,” said Coon Rapids Police Chief Andy Klein.
The Iowa State Patrol joined in the high-speed chase, which ended more than 30 miles away after stop-sticks were used to puncture the tires of the stolen Coon Rapids police SUV.
