Iowa State Trooper laid to rest

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa -- Iowa is mourning the loss of a state trooper who was killed during a standoff last week.

Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith was laid to rest on Friday in Independence.

Law enforcement, community members, family, and friends came together Friday morning at Sergeant Smith's funeral.

Among those who spoke at the funeral were:

  • Colonel Nathan Fulk, Iowa State Patrol
  • Trooper Jon Stickney, Iowa State Patrol
  • Pastor Zane Hall, Former Jesup Bible Fellowship Pastor
  • Pastor Matt Perez, Former Jesup Bible Fellowship Pastor

Sergeant Smith was part of a team of officers that went into a home to arrest a man who assaulted an officer during a traffic stop.

Smith was shot and killed during the operation.

The suspect was taken alive after being shot multiple times by officers.

Law enforcement remember Smith for his dedication to the community and bravery in the line of duty.
