MASON CITY, Iowa (KTTC) -- Birdsall's Ice Cream has been a Mason City staple since 1931 when it was founded by the Birdsall family.
After the retirement of the ice cream maker, Mark Repp, who gave the company 50 years, the passing of longtime owner David Vaughn Escher and the COVID-19 pandemic, Birdsall's was forced to permanently close.
Wednesday it was announced the establishment will be reopening with all new owners.
Mason City residents, Gary Schmit and his wife Anne Schmit announced on Facebook they had officially taken ownership of Birdsall’s along with their new business partners Marc and Michelle Murray.
“We hated to see it close down. So we reached out to the estate, the owner passed away last year, and we were able to purchase it,” said Gary Schmit.
While the new owners do not have an exact re-opening date, they are hoping they can get everything together as soon as possible.
“We’ll need two or three weeks to get our feet wet, learn the business and get operational. But after that we’ll have ice cream for the summer,” stated Schmit.
Even though they are new owners, the Schmits and Murrays will still keep the original name as well as the nostalgic look and feel that has customers feeling like they are taking a step back in time.
