ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Many workers are suddenly off on Friday in observance of Juneteenth, which is now officially a federal holiday. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law on Thursday.
This will not impact mail getting sent out ahead of Father's Day. Post offices are still open Friday and Saturday.
The Postal Service said in a statement on its website that it's not possible to close down so quickly.
"We are part of the nation’s critical infrastructure and our customers are relying on us to deliver our essential services," USPS said. "Closing down our operations without providing appropriate time would lead to operational disruptions and be a disservice to our customers and those who rely upon us."
USPS added that it's "fully supportive" of the new federal holiday, and it will discuss recognizing the day in the future with national unions and other groups.
