CHATFIELD, Minn. (KTTC) - Chatfield enters 2021 as a threat to win the Section 1AA title.
The Gophers return one of the best players in the area in running back Sam Backer. Backer is only a junior and brings a combination of power and speed that is nearly unmatched in Southeastern Minnesota.
Head Coach Jeff Johnson has yet to name a starting quarterback to replace three-year starter, Reid Johnson. Instead, the Gophers will employ a "quarterback by committee" until they settle on a guy.
Chatfield has the pieces to compete this year and they're hungry for success. They say that commitment started last November.
"We all took a pact together, to say that everybody that's going to play has to be in the weight room, has to work hard, has to do extra conditioning after practice," said Senior Caden Nolte. "Everybody pitched in and really bought in to the whole idea."
"Our strength is going to be our team speed," said Chatfield Head Coach Jeff Johnson. "We're pretty fast on our offensive and defensive lines as well. One thing we do have a good sense of [physicality] and speed all over the field. That usually wins a lot of ballgames, so we're pretty excited for that."
Chatfield opens the season on Friday against the PEM Bulldogs.
