Throwback Thursday: Billy Graham visits Rochester

During the week of October 6, 1968, Rochester was visited by reverend Billy Graham.

Though he was in town for routine medical checkups at Mayo Clinic, he spoke at a press conference held at the Kahler Hotel, shown here in this photo from October 9, found in the archives at the History Center of Olmsted County. He addressed a range of topics from the need for birth control to the World Series.

In a politically contentious year, he remained neutral, but said, “We have moved away from our spiritual and moral moorings that have made us great,” and argued that the older generation had failed the younger.
