ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The new year is all about new beginnings, and as you’re preparing for a fresh start, it can also help others.

The Goodwill in Rochester tends to see an increase during this time of year. The north location on Scott Road Northwest was busy all-day Monday with people driving up to donate clothes, furniture, electronics, and much more.

Goodwill employees tell us they get a lot of donations around the end of the year. During a typical weekday, they’ll see between 175 and 200 cars. But as of 2 p.m. Monday, more than 220 cars had stopped by, with three hours left to drop off items.

The store’s general manger explains why it’s important to donate.

“It’s to support Goodwill, but it’s also the good thing to do as far as supporting the environment. We keep a lot of products out of landfills when people bring it here, and we give it a second life. [We also] help people that need something that’s used and maybe they can’t afford a new item,” said David Schlobohm.

You can drop off your items at the Goodwill’s Donation Centers on New Years Day between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at either the north or south location. The store itself opens one hour later at 9 a.m.

On a typical day, the Rochester Goodwill Donation Center locations are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. They are closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and Easter.

Items that can be donated include home decor goods, toys, kitchen electrics, clothes, and even cars and boats (you just need to let them know in advance). However, you cannot donate mattresses, bed frames, computer monitors, or large appliances.

The majority of items stay in Rochester, but some items are sent to Goodwill stores in St. Paul.
