UPDATE: Minnesota State Patrol identifies victims in fatal crash in Freeborn County

UPDATE: NEAR HAYWARD, Minn (KTTC)  – The Minnesota State Patrol has identified the victims of a single car crash on Interstate 90 east of Hayward Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the Honda CR-V was 76-year-old William Studer from Albert Lea. He was killed in the crash.

The passenger ejected was 80-year-old Elaine Lieb also from Albert Lea.


NEAR HAYWARD, Minn. (KTTC) – A man is dead, and a woman hospitalized following a crash on Interstate 90 east of Hayward.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, an 76-year-old Albert Lea man was driving west in a Honda CR-V on I-90 when he started to suffer from an unknown medical condition just after 3:30 p.m.

He drove off the interstate and into a ditch on the right. The SUV continued through a farm field then “vaulted” over Freeborn County Road 30.

The Honda then went over Freeborn County Road 46 and rolled several times before throwing the 80-year-old female passenger.

Responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

An ambulance took the passenger to a nearby hospital. She was later flown to Mayo Clinic Saint Marys with life-threatening injuries.
