One man dead in SE Rochester following police traffic stop

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – One man is dead after an altercation with police in southeast Rochester Wednesday evening.

A Rochester police officer attempted a “non-routine” traffic stop around 8:55 p.m. in the 1000 block of 15th Avenue where a “physical struggle immediately ensued” in the Cub Foods parking lot, according to Rochester Police Chief Jim Franklin.

Franklin says once the driver was apprehended, he was unresponsive. He did not comment on what methods were used to apprehend the man.

“Officers immediately began life-saving efforts, including calling Gold Cross and doing CPR. Unfortunately, those life-saving efforts were unsuccessful,” said Franklin.

Police body camera video of the incident has been turned over to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The agency is now leading this investigation.
