“Power of the Purse” serves to benefit, educate and inspire

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The 14th annual “Power of the Purse” auction, luncheon and benefit took over the Rochester International Event Center Tuesday. The fundraiser is hosted by the United Way of Olmsted County with the goal of creating a better future for local youth, one purse at a time.

This year, Sue Klebold is the event's inspirational speaker. Her son was one of the two Columbine High School Shootings gunmen.

The sold out event benefits United Way’s programs to help kids establish positive learning environments and role models.

Klebold shared how she used that tragedy to become a mental health activist.

“I have come to a place now 20 years later where I believe I would never, ever wish that…that this hadn’t happened.” Said Klebold.

Klebold is the author of the New York Times bestseller “A Mother’s Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy.”

“I think when we experience difficult and challenging things, it makes us into more understanding people, more compassionate people, it helps us listen, live in the present moment. to appreciate every moment to which we are not suffering. There are gifts from events such as that.”

Klebold is the author of the New York Times bestseller “A Mother’s Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy.”

As part of the event, Klebold signed copies of her book after the auction and luncheon wrapped up.
