RPD updates NW Rochester shooting investigation

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting deaths of a Rochester father and son.

Tuesday afternoon, investigators identified the men as 18-year old Maxwell Artem Pearson and his father 61-year-old Gary Pearson. Police say Maxwell’s mother found his body just before 4 p.m. Monday. Responding officers then discovered Gary’s body about 20 to 30 yards away from his son.

Both were found outside the home and investigators believe the son shot the father with a hunting rifle. However, police also say neighbors didn’t hear gunshots.

Rochester Police Department Lieutenant, Mike Sadauskis

Rochester Police Department Lieutenant Mike Sadauskis says the mother had some concerns within the last year about the son’s mental health.

“There might be some mental illness thats been there that there was some concern about and you know just again shows that how if that is the case how powerful that can be and how we as a society and culture need to try to do our best to be addressing mental illness and getting people the help they need,” said Lt. Sadauskis.

The “on-scene” investigation showed both men had just one gunshot wound.

Investigators are waiting on results from autopsies.
