ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Its that time of year again, United Way of Olmsted County is working to ensure students start off the school year prepared for success. KTTC and FOX 47 are teaming up with the organization to help stuff school buses with supplies this weekend.
Its all a part of the “Running Start for School” drive. Folks started collecting donations at Walmart North from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The community wide event, has a goal of providing needed supplies for about 2,300 local students across 35 schools in Olmsted County. United Way of Olmsted County Impact Program Manager Grace Pesch says it helps students start the school year on the right foot.
“If kids go to school unprepared that’s a really big roadblock to being able to focus and get all of their work done and get their grades they need to succeed on in early,” Pesch said. “So if we can do something to alleviate that stress for the families and the kiddos, I think that’s a wonderful thing.”
Volunteers are collecting all sorts of school supplies from notebooks to glue sticks, but are especially in need of backpacks.
“On our online drive you can purchase a backpack filled with all of the supplies students need for 10 to 15 dollars,” Pesch said. “We’re still in need of about 150 of those pre-packed backpacks to be donated to us.”
School supplies needed include:
- Backpacks (Size large: 19″)
- Glue sticks (washable, small)
- 2-pocket folders (red, yellow, green, blue)
- Markers (washable, 8-pack, thick, chisel-tip)
