Austin man charged in Lime Springs bank robbery

LIME SPRINGS, Iowa (KTTC) — An Austin man has been charged in connection with a bank robbery in Lime Springs on Tuesday, according to the Howard County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said Luis Vega of Austin was charged with 1st Degree Robbery, a Class B felony charge.

Deputies believe that Vega entered a Cresco Union Savings Bank at about 12:20 p.m. wearing a ski mask and waiving a handgun while demanding money from the drawer.

Authorities said he did not injure anyone but did take an unspecified amount of cash.

According to the Cresco Times Plain Dealer, a customer who was on the phone with one of the bank employees at the time of the robbery made the 911 call.

Deputies responded to the call and and reviewed bank surveillance video to identify the man’s license plate. The Austin Police Department secured the location of the vehicle and arrested him just before 3 p.m.
