Des Moines police charge man with murder after death of teen

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police have charged a man in the death of a teenager who was fatally shot in northeast Des Moines.

Police say detectives on Monday arrested 28-year-old Javell D. Williams, of Des Moines, in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Donzell Martin.

Williams was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

Officers were sent Sunday night to an area near Union Park to check on reports of gunshots. A few minutes later officers learned a shooting victim believed to be from that neighborhood had been taken by private vehicle to a nearby hospital.

The killing of Martin was the city’s fourth homicide of the year.

Police say Williams will be taken to the Polk County jail. Online court records don’t list an attorney who could answer questions about his arrest.
