Family of kayakers rescued from river Tuesday

NEAR BLUFFTON, Iowa (KTTC) – Rescue crews pulled a family of 11 kayakers to safety Tuesday afternoon.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office got the emergency call about 1:50 p.m. for stranded kayakers on an island in the Upper Iowa River near Chimney Rock Park.

The sheriff’s office says one of the kayakers overturned and lost their kayak. That person was hanging onto tree branches awaiting rescue. Decorah Fire and Rescue crews located the party using a drone and rescued them.

The rescued kayakers ranged in age from 6 to 71 years old. There were no reports of injuries.

According to the sheriff’s office, DNR and DOT enforcement also assisted at the scene.
