Ice breaking to begin next week on Lake Superior

DULUTH, Minn. (KBJR) — Coast Guard ice cutters will be out next week on Lake Superior to start getting the water ready for the upcoming shipping season.

Officials say the CGC Alder and heavy ice-breaker CGC Mackinaw plan to be on the lake on Wednesday, March 20th.

They will be joined by the Canadian CGS Samuel Risley in Whitefish Bay, and then move west across the lake.

Coast Guard officials say they plan for the Alder and the Mackinaw to make their way into the Port of Duluth-Superior and neighboring areas to help with moving ships out of winter layup.

The Alder is scheduled to remain in the Twin Ports after the initial Lake Superior ice-breaking prep work is done.
