Tornado briefly touches down in Winona cemetery

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) — The National Weather Service in La Crosse reported that a brief tornado touched down within a cemetery near Winona on Wednesday morning.

They said the EF1 tornado touched down at about 6:22 this morning, staying on the ground only about a minute.

The tornado had estimated peak wind gusts of 95 mph and traveled 0.2 miles.

The Weather Service said in a Facebook post that the tornado caused extensive tree damage within the cemetery, in addition to sporadic wind damage that was reported in the city.

Dave Lawrence, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told KTTC there was a broad, weak rotation visible on one scan and they were able to confirm it via radar at about 6:25 a.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service traveled to Winona late Wednesday morning to confirm the damage.
