NEAR BYRON, Minn. (KTTC) – May 3rd, 2019 is a date Paul and Karla Fischenich will never forget.
A car crash sent them both to a hospital with serious injuries and has led to a long recovery.
A 36-year-old man driving a truck hit the rear driver’s side of Paul and Karla Fischenich’s truck at the intersection of Highway 14 and County Road 3 just east of Byron. The collision sent their vehicle rolling several times.
“It started to spin us around, and then all of a sudden we started flipping and I think for a while we were both unconscious,” said Paul Fischenich.
Paul suffered a severe concussion, severe whiplash, and a broken collarbone. Karla suffered injuries to her face, neck, spine, and shoulder.
“That night, I had seven surgeon’s work eight and a half hours to, as they put it, put me back together,” said Karla Fischenich.
The Fischenich’s are thankful for all the help and support they’ve received from everyone since the crash.
“A doctor, a nurse practitioner, two nurses, and a paramedic, probably within two minutes of the accident happening, all their helping,” said Paul. “We’re just thankful for everyone that helped us.”
A benefit is being held for the couple this Saturday, October 12th, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Kasson from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Funds raised will help cover the cost of future medical bills.
There will be a lunch, silent auction, live music, and bake sale.
