ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) — If you pumped gas at a Hy-Vee gas station Saturday morning you might have seen students asking if you wanted help. It was a fundraising event for the Police Explorers Program.
Students in the program are raising money for future competitions, new equipment and scholarships.
The program gives students an opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement. They meet every first and third Sunday of the month to go over skills police officers need on the job and more.
Mayo High School senior Spencer Peterson has been apart of the program for three years and said it has opened his eyes. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at all this has helped me find what I wanna do its influenced me a lot and I’ve made a lot of great connections.”
Peterson said he’s gained real world experience through the program, something he said he would not have learned from a textbook.
