NEAR LE SUEUR, Minn. (KTTC) – Crews were on the scene of a train derailment that triggered a diesel fuel spill and fire.

Kristin South, a Union Pacific spokesperson, said that a southbound locomotive and about a dozen rail cars left the tracks.

The accident happened around 5 a.m. Friday near Le Sueur.

Diesel fuel from the locomotive reportedly spilled and caught fire. Crews responded and decided to let the fire burn itself out.

By 8 a.m., the fire was deemed to be under control.

While there is no indication any of the spilled diesel has made its way into the nearby Mississippi, an absorbent boom is now in the water as a precaution.

Train crew members were taken to the hospital following the derailment, but no serious injuries were reported.
