ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Unsung heroes are among us all the time. Thursday night, was a chance to recognize them.

The VFW Post in Rochester hosted the 3rd Annual Women Veterans Gala, paying tribute to women who have served our country.

It was a packed house. 180 women, all veterans from Southeastern Minnesota, representing all branches of the service came out tonight.

The oldest, a woman who served in World War II and the youngest, serving in 2014, a 70-year span.

Olmsted County Veterans Services officer Jennifer Shumaker says this event allows the women to connect through the unbreakable bond of their service.

“The goals of this event is to get those women to make those connections, because when you serve in the military you make those connections you create your own family, you have that camaraderie,” Shumaker said. “And when you leave the service, that doesn’t go with you, it leaves too. So, this is a great way to bring that back into their lives.”

Also for the former service members, Olmsted County Veterans Services is hosting its first women veterans retreat, which will be an outdoor program, sometime this fall.
