ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The Century Panthers Hockey team is off to a hot start this season, and right in the thick of it is junior forward Joey Malugani.
In 12 games, Malugani has 13 goals and 11 assists, good for a two point per game average, to lead the Panthers to a 10-2 start to the year. When asked about the season, Malugani kept it short and simple.
“It’s going good,” he said. “It’s going good.”
The Panthers are undefeated in conference play this year, own a 10-game win streak, and won the Kiwanis Tournament for the first time since 2011… a game in which Malugani had his first career hat trick.
“That was awesome. The third one was just the cherry on top [against Anoka], but the first goals were important [to the 5-1].”
After his 3-goal performance in the Kiwanis Championship, Malugani was locked in against undefeated Mayo… scoring a goal, and assisting the game winner, as Century dealt Mayo it’s first loss of the season.
“That was the best game that we played all year,” said Malugani. “I thought we played pretty good, so it was fun to play in. It’s always awesome to play Mayo.”
Malugani’s success is no suprirse to head coach Josh Klingfus, who has relied on Malugani as the team’s rock not only when the lights have shined the brighest this year, but throughout their strong start to the season.
“To be honest, I don’t know if it’s really the bigger games… what makes Joey effective is he’s at every game. He shows up to play every single game,” Klingfus said. “He’s been our most consistent player. He just has mental focus all the time.”
Joey Malugani of the Century Panthers Hockey team is this week’s KTTC NewsCenter Sports Athlete of the Week.
