AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) – It’s rare that players get a story book ending to their high school career, but that’s exactly what Austin Guard Medi Obang got.

Entering the final game of his high school career, Obang was 37 points shy of 1,000… and he scored 38. It was a touch of Medi’s magic, and he almost had no idea.

“He needed 37. We didn’t tell him,” Head Coach Kris Fadness said. “Medi knew that he needed 50 points or less to get 1,000. He didn’t know exactly how much, and we didn’t really want to tell him because we didn’t want him coming out in that 3rd place game just gunning and going for his numbers… We wanted to win the game.”

Come out gunning he did not, as he efficiently fired in 14 of 26 shots from the field and sank 8 of 10 free throws. Following a heartbreaking loss to Waseca in the state semifinals, Obang was devastated.

“It was really tough,” he said following the loss. “I really put my… I really put it all on the court.”

And leave it all on the court he did, responding with his 38 point 5 steal virtuoso performance to bring home the Consolation Championship and 3rd place trophy to Austin.

“He is a gamer,” Fadness said. “He gets after it. He plays almost with an anger it looks like because he’s so focused at all times and he’s very driven.”

Obang was not scared of the big stage and arenas of the state tournament. The Packers are a perennial power in 3A, and the best basketball program in Southeastern Minnesota.

“I was used to it because last year I came here. It just felt like another court to me,” he said.

Obang was named to the 3A All-Tournament team, and now awaits his college decision. But for now, he’s this week’s KTTC NewsCenter Sports Athlete of the Week.
