WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) – In high school softball, games last 7 innings. 21 outs per side. In her last two games in the circle, Cotter senior Izzy Northrop has recorded 39 of the possible 42 outs via strike out. She is quite simply a strike out machine. But to her, the swings and misses aren’t special, they’re just like any other out.

“As a pitcher, it’s kind of just an out but I kind of pitch as the batters come,” she said. “It’s an out, and it’s a good accomplishment for the team.”

For the season, the two-time all-state selection has a perfect 4-0 record, a 0.33 ERA, and 58 strikeouts. Following a school record 19-strike out no-hitter against PEM, she followed that up with a 20 strike out complete game shutout against previously undefeated Lewiston-Altura.

“You always want to take advantate when you have a great pitcher, and Isabel is that for us,” said head coach Pat Bowlin. “She’s a winner, and we want to take advantage of her great career. When you get a player like this, you want to be able to go as far as you can.”

Last year, the senior star led the Ramblers to their first appearance at the state tournament since 2009. Head Coach Pat Bowlin knows what sets his ace apart from all of the others.

“There’s a lot of great pitchers, but they really consistently only go down one side. Isabel is terrific on both corners,” he said. “Along with her great pitching, it’s her location that really sets her apart.”

For now though, Northrop is focused on taking her team back to the state tournament for the second straight season.

“I definitely think the season is going really well this year,” said Northop. “I definitely think that we can get to state again.”

Izzy Northrop of the Cotter Ramblers softball team is this week’s KTTC NewsCenter Sports Athlete of the Week.
