ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – When it comes to high school golfers in Southeastern Minnesota, there’s not one better than Lourdes’ Luke Alexander.
The Eagles’ Senior is already a 4-time state entrant, 5-time All-Conference player, and has won 5 of the 7 events he’s played this year.
He is simply unstoppable.
“He’s right up there in the top that I’ve had, no question,” said Lourdes Golf Head Coach Chris Miller.
Alexander finished 6th at the AA State Tournament last year, and is primed for another competitive showing. But it was his experience at state as a young 8th grader that has made him the golfer he is now.
“Going [to state] as an 8th grader, I was kind of star struck the whole time,” said Alexander. “But then after I didn’t play that well, a number of coaches and family members said ‘Just keep going at it over time. You can get there you have a lot of potential,’ so I kind of stuck with that and now I’m kind of seeing it work.”
Alexander is just scratching the surface at how good of a golfer he can be. Next year, Alexander will golf at the Division I level at Villanova.
“Sky is the limit,” said Miller. “I know for Luke school is first, but he will put all his efforts that he can into golf and improving, especially this summer. He’s a long hitter and he’s a very good thinker on the course.”
He’s also a tremendous leader. Even though golf is an individual sport, it’s the improvement of the team that has stood out to him this season.
“Some of the younger guys — the 3, 4, and 5’s — their scores have come down 8 strokes, 10 strokes, and I’m really excited to see if that will continue. That way, we can have a really good shot come sections [at going to state as a team].”
“He is so good with the other kids,” Miller said. “He’s such a great leader. He’s such a great young man. Villanova is lucky to have him.”
Luke Alexander of the Lourdes Eagles Golf Team is this week’s KTTC NewsCenter Sports Athlete of the Week.
