AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) – Austin Packers running back Andy Chesak had the game of a lifetime Friday night against Mankato East. The senior cut through the Cougars’ defense like a hot knife through butter, racking up 280 yards and 5 touchdowns in the Packers’ 34-28 win.
“I know what I can do as a player, but it was nice to showcase that and actually put it to work,” said Chesak. “The lineman came out and blocked nice, and got me some holes to run through.”
It was only Chesak’s fourth start on offense, but his head coach new early that his senior tailback was in the zone.
“Just the cuts he was making. Watching a little bit of film on the sideline, and just seeing his vision, and that’s what I kept telling him – ‘Your vision is phenomenal, so keep it up,'” said Packers Head Coach Ed Schmitt. “He was just finding holes that a lot of running backs may not find.”
Chesak’s performance was historic, posting career-highs in both yards and touchdowns. But it wasn’t just his 5 house calls that led Austin to victory. Chesak affected all three phases of the game — blocking a punt, coming up with a few huge defensive stops, and nearly taking a kickoff all the way to the house.
“I just try to do whatever I can to make sure the team wins,” he said. “Every time I go out there.”
“He’s a coach’s dream,” said Schmitt. “He does anything you want him to do. He doesn’t need to get 40 touches a game. He doesn’t complain about anything. If you want him to pass block, he’ll pass block. You want him to play a guard position, he would go do that no problem.”
With their win against Mankato East, the Packers are now 2-0, matching their win total from a disappointing 2018 season.
“We just knew that it was a big game because we wanted to show it’s a redemption year for us,” Chesak said. “We wanted to prove what we can do as a team.”
Chesak’s proof is in the pudding. 280 yards and 5 touchdowns of it.
