ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – There is no other way to say it — Lourdes’ Emma Schmitz is a play maker.

In last week’s Section 1A Championship, the senior midfielder scored the game’s only goal against undefeated Cotter to send the Eagles to state for the third year in a row.

“I was kind of nervous at first, but when I hit it in I was so excited,” said Schmitz. “As you know, we lost to them 4-0 at the beginning of the season, so I think that we went even harder [this time against Cotter].”

Schmitz, who says she is 5-foot-2, is a Division I hockey player that will play at Sacred Heart University next year. Despite being undersized, Schmitz has never let her measurables define her.

“I’m obviously super small, so I can really like… People might think that I’m weak, but, I mean, I stand my ground,” she said. “I just find the slots to sneak through I guess.”

The ability to score goals at a high clip is a rare skill, and long-time Lourdes Head Coach Sarah Groven says Schmitz is among the best she’s ever seen.

“Emma has great confidence and she wants to bury the ball in the net,” said Groven. “She wants to score, and she wants to be able to have that control to make things happen.”

Control that her head coach is more than happy to give her.

“She’s so tenacious. She wants to get that ball and she’s not going to let anybody else get it,” said Groven. “She knows where to be on the field. She’s got great soccer sense, so she understands ‘I’ve got to be here to get this pass. I’ve got to be there to make this play happen.’ And not every knows that.”

On Thursday, Schmitz leads the Eagles’ into a tilt against 3-seed Orono, who the Eagles beat 1-0 August 27th here in town. Her message for the Spartans?

“Just know that we’re going to bring it to them. And we’re going to play our hardest, and hopefully come out with a win and see us at [U.S. Bank Stadium].”

Emma Schmitz of the Lourdes Eagles Soccer team is this week’s KTTC Athlete of the Week.
