ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) — When it comes to track and field, you’re talking about some of the best athletes, but also some of the most forgotten.

“No one really hears about it because it’s really individualized and after the school year,” said Annie Wendt, Minnesota State Long Jump Champion.

Over the weekend Mayo’s Annie Wendt took to the air to prove her dominance, placing first in the long jump.

“It’s a great way to go out,” added Wendt.

But she had to settle for second in the triple jump after losing a tie breaker by 3/4 of an inch.

“It was frustrating, but I’m so glad to have the competition and be able to still walk away with second, but it’s a bit frustrating, because I was so close, but not close enough,” explained Wendt.

“I was more happy that she had one last big jump in her to make it close and competitive and at that point, you can’t really be disappointed, knowing that she put it all out there on the last one,” said Jeff Schlicter, Mayo Track and Field Jumps Coach.

Even though Annie fell just short of winning both championships, this wasn’t even something on her radar a few years ago.

“No not all, I just wanted to have fun and it’s gotten me here. It’s been a journey from the beginning, I wasn’t that great my freshman year,” said Wendt.

“For someone like her, who didn’t even see herself on a track radar, until her Junior year. To be able to make that sort of progress to a first place at a state meet is really impressive,” added Schlicter.

Mayo Track and Field’s Annie Wendt is this week’s KTTC Newscenter Sports Athlete of the Week.
