Weekend Winter Storm Potential

Remaining Ad Time Ad - 00:00

We saw an abundance of late February sunshine for today which helped melt snow off of area roads despite having temperatures well below freezing. We’ll see one more relatively quiet weather day for Friday, then it’s game on for snow and ice for this weekend!

High pressure gradually shifts to the east for tonight which will allow for a few more clouds to sneak across the area later tonight and into Friday. A weak storm system should miss us just to the north on Friday with flurries and perhaps light snow showers possible for Friday morning well west of I-35 as high temperatures push 30 degrees by the afternoon!

All eyes are on Friday night through Sunday as a series of storm systems move across the Upper Midwest. I want to stress that any small shift in the storm track Saturday night will have big impacts on how much snow/ice/rain we may see here across southeast Minnesota. Our first system arrives for Friday night bringing light snow to the area with perhaps 1-2 inches of snow possible before we see a transition over to light freezing rain prior to daybreak Saturday. A couple of tenths of ice may be possible Saturday morning which will make travel across southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa on the slippery side.

We may see a small window Saturday afternoon with little to no precipitation as high temperatures climb into the low to mid 30s. Precipitation is expected to spread back across the area for Saturday evening in the form of rain or freezing rain before we transition quickly over to snow for Saturday night. While heavy snow may be possible with this system, the exact placement of this heavy snow band is not clear at this time. What is looking likely at this point is for strong winds to pick up Saturday night and to continue into Sunday with considerable blowing and drifting snow for Sunday. Snow showers are expected to wrap up around daybreak Sunday. Needless to say, if you have any travel plans for this weekend, please stay up to date with the latest forecast.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for this weekend.
