Our weather pattern is about to become more winter-like heading into this weekend as we’re talking the potential for snow for most of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa as we head towards Saturday! Along with the threat for snow, we’ll also see some rain and strong winds making for a messy first half of the weekend!
Before we talk snow, let’s talk sunshine! Skies clear out for tonight as our latest storm system shifts east and should set the stage for a sunshine filled day for Friday. While we are expecting sunshine Friday, temperatures will be cooler with highs around 60 degrees and northwest winds gusting up to 30 mph.
And now, the snow portion of the forecast.
Our next storm system arrives late Friday night bringing rain initially to southern Minnesota and northern Iowa by Saturday morning. Cold air begins to infiltrate this storm system by mid morning Saturday which should start to cool temperatures from the upper 30s around daybreak to the low to mid 30s by the midday. As temperatures cool, we’ll see a transition over to snow late Saturday morning for most of southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa with mainly snow then expected through the afternoon. Periods of heavy snow may be possible at times on Saturday, especially for the midday which may lead to slushy or snow covered roads at times. Snow accumulations will be tricky to pin down with this system as the ground is very warm, but many areas could see 3 to 6 inches of snow from this system by Saturday evening. If you have any travel plans Saturday, be aware of the threat for reduced visibility due to blowing snow along with slippery roads.
Sunday is looking to be the nicer day of the weekend with partly sunny skies and no rain or snow showers. Temperatures may be influenced by potential snow cover with highs in the 40s where there is snow cover to the lower 50s where there is no snow cover. Rain returns by Sunday evening with rain likely from Sunday night lasting through Monday. In fact, it looks like next week could remain on the soggy side with rain chances sticking around for next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday!
